Champix® (Varenicline tartrate)
Champix® (varenicline tartrate) is a fairly new drug developed by Pfizer which has been available via prescription from 2007.

This unique drug, which does not contain nicotine, was developed specifically to help people stop smoking by reducing cravings & withdrawal symptoms. When a quitter has a cigarette while using Champix®  smoking becomes less satisfying.

Champix® is not suitable for everyone and it is not recommended for those under 18 or pregnant/breastfeeding women.

It has to be prescribed by a Doctor and should be taken when you are still smoking - to allows the drug to build up in the body before your quit date. The drug should be taken for 12 weeks with an optional further 12 weeks after that, but your Doctor will discuss this with you. Most Doctors will prescribe Champix® if you have tried & been unsuccessful on NRT and if you get some support whilst quitting (e.g. a group or pharmacy service)

The main side effect that people notice is nausea, however, this can be reduced by avoiding taking the tablets on an empty stomach. The manufacturer also says to be aware that the drug can cause sleepiness in a few people.
