My Story

Owen Dill, 45 from the Gorbals was a smoker for 32 years.

When asked in what way the groups helped Owen to stop smoking he replied:

"Think it was looking forward to going back week to week and feeling good about myself. Being able to say I hadn't wavered and hearing how others did."

If you were to describe the stop smoking groups to a friend what would you say?

"I would tell them the group is great for being amongst other whose feelings and anxieties are the same as yours. It is just really good knowing you have that kind of support for taking on one of the most difficult tasks possible ever."

Maureen Duncan, 62 from Castlemilk was a smoker for 46 years.

"The groups had a relaxed atmosphere, everyone was supporting one another and I personally made good friends. I was never a strong willed person and have shocked family and friends by stopping. Without the group and staff support my life would be nothing."

Michelle Sim, 39 from Clydebank was a smoker for over 20 years. She stopped smoking for her children and her health.

"They (Stop smoking groups) are excellent. I tried several times before and was only successful with the support of my group. You feel a connection with those around you as you are all sharing an experience together."

E. McMillan, 56 from Bishopbriggs was a smoker for 40 years. She stopped smoking using the 16 hour NRT patch and attending a stop smoking group.

"Just go and give it a chance."

Mike Hewitt, 42 attended a workplace stop smoking group.

A smoker for 26 years, Mike's reasons for stopping were his children, health and also the cost. He found that he was 'motivated by others stopping' and would describe the stop smoking groups as 'Supportive, Informative (and) Motivational'.
