| Smokefree Community Services |
These services run across Glasgow and Clyde and generally offer free, intensive group support. The group support sessions meet in various local venues for one hour each week for 7 weeks and are relaxed, friendly and informal. Quitting smoking with a group is one of the best ways to stop successfully. You are 4 times more likely to quit than going it alone. The first 2 weeks are information sessions when you can decide if this is the right time for you to give up. At week 3, everybody quits together and weeks 4 to 7 are group support - an opportunity for quitters to share how they are getting on - their ups and downs, what is helpful and what isn't and to offer general encouragement. The groups are run by 2 trained facilitators. They are suitable for anyone who wants to give up and heavier smokers (more than 20 cigarettes a day) find this intensive support extra helpful. There is no need to get NRT in advance of the group: this is organised through the group. You will be given a form on your 1st / 2nd week which you take directly to your local pharmacy to collect your NRT. If you wish to use Zyban or Champix then you will need to speak with your GP as both these products are available on prescription only. The trained facilitator will speak to you at the 1st/2nd week of the group regarding what products may be most suitable. Find your nearest stop smoking group |
